Barrel Oh' Monkeys "The Great Escape"
Philosophy
This year we have chosen to focus on escaping our routine. While we would typically build large gathering spaces that are lit by propane fire, this year we are doing a single sculptural piece that has no flame effects, and is lit entirely by solar power. Barrel Oh Monkeys “The Great Escape” will represent the Iron Monkeys' escape from our norms, and will incorporate pieces of past projects meant to showcase who we are, and where we have come from. Reworking these pieces, and adding new parts provides hints as to where we are going and what we want to become. We will invite others to join us in escaping their routine with interactive elements such as a pair of spinning wheels, one with street letters and the other with times, that will encourage spontaneous discovery. Participants can also climb the barrel to modify their perspective. |

DescriptionBarrel Oh Monkeys “The Great Escape'' is a large, climbable, barrel made of steel and leather. Standing ~15 feet tall, the barrel will span 10’ at the top and bottom, and 14’ across the center. Skinned in a combination of leather tiles and decorative blacksmithed scroll work, the barrel will provide shade during the day. At night, lighting will spill out from inside onto the playa.
Inside the barrel is a tiered circular wooden seat that offers a place to sit and relax. Windows in the barrel provide a portal to engage and enjoy the world outside. The top of the barrel will have more places to sit and survey the playa. When ready to move on to your next adventure, but are not sure where to go, two carnival wheels - one with street names, the other with clock times - inside the barrel can guide you on your way. Outside the barrel will be benches, with a simple fence to define the space. Occasionally, a wood burning fire pit may appear at night along with a gaggle of monkeys.
