REM Cafe and Croquet
Philosophy
Remember playing restaurant as a child? The whimsy and endless possibilities available in your imagination? That is our vision. To achieve that vision we don’t want to take ourselves too seriously, and we invite the participants to do the same.
REM is a place of shared play, where all who participate are encouraged to take reality with a grain of “playa dust”. It’s a platform for people’s imagination, a collaborative environment for friends, families and strangers to play together. Fire and art are both powerful agents of engagement and when combined they encourage interactions between the participants and the art itself. We believe that children are the future...oh wait...wrong reference… Anyway, we believe that warm fire and whimsical art are a sure fire recipe for fun. |
Description
The Restaurant at the End of the Multiverse (REM) is a fiery communal space in a parallel universe.
Around the circumference of the 60’ wide space will be 15 hanging lamps casting pools of red light onto the ground. Cuz you can’t have a restaurant without some ambiance. Three portals, one with a maitre’d station, connect REM to the outside world. Commanding the center of REM will be a 7’ wide steel armillary, piped for propane flame effects. Filling in the space between the armillary and the perimeter will be three big-ass tables and three fire zen gardens. The three tables are the soul of REM. 10’ x 5’ ovals, the tables will have stools and benches inviting participants to have a seat with friends or strangers. The center of the tables will be lit with a bed of fire. Emerging from the fire will be 3’ tall flaming steel candelabras. The zen gardens are steel bowls filled with sand and piped with propane. Blacksmithed fire tools allow participants to draw in the fiery gardens. |
Fundraising this year
In the interest of spending more time building our art we are moving away from popular crowdfunding platforms this year. The need to fulfill donor rewards has been a massive tax on our human capital and honestly just makes us grumpy. No one wants a grumpy Monkey. We also worry about donor fatigue as the pool of artists using those platforms continues to grow. So what are we doing instead? We have been fortunate enough to have built a large fan base over the years and are going to directly ask a set of our loyal donors for support this year. We are also trying out a new fundraising platform, Ko-fi, which we hope will allow our friends and fans to donate to us year round. The platform allows us to find new donors, share our work and quite frankly do fundraising a bit differently. |
